Vintage Catherine Noll Chunky Horn and Ebony Necklace, 1970s 22.5”
Parisian designer Catherine Noll (1945-1994) was a sculptural jeweler known for bold designs and a passion for natural materials. She inherited a furniture atelier from her grandfather and turned into her own jewelry boutique. She later designed jewelry for Nina Ricci, Chanel, Christian Dior, Baccarat, and Bergdorf Goodman, according to online sources.
This was one of her signature creations, several versions of it using different materials available online, including much more expensive ‘Red Horn’ necklaces. She did not sign it or mark it, but she rarely did according to our research.
We believe this necklace’s beads are made of ebony and her signature hook clasp made of bone. There was some dust and wear visible between beads which we cleaned and treated with lemon oil wood polish to return to a beautiful black gleam. At least one bead is damaged but that may be the way it came. We do believe a bead adjacent to part of the clasp with a hole was originally glued to the horn as on the other side of the clasp. We also believe there may have been less ‘slack’ in the string the beads are on when first acquired.
This necklace was found with our grandmother’s vintage jewelry collection. We do not know where or when she bought it.
Length 22.5” clasp to clasp
