Vintage Chinese Export Silver Cuff Bracelet with Imitation Lapis Lazuli 7"

SKU: B020
$70.00Price

We were sure this unique cuff bracelet was Afghan, Berber or other Central Asian silver, especially given the tear drop shape settings, however we found CHINA HB6 stamped inside the cuff. Our research then suggested it is vintage Chinese export silver, usually made from sterling or a high grade silver alloy, which sometimes included embellishments like lapis lazuli or glass cabochons mimicking lapis.

Ours seems to have stones that were painted or enameled to appear as lapis lazuli, the color now coming off several stones. There is no silver marking however it did test positive for silver very quickly on a home acid test. We assume HB6 was the maker’s mark.

The cuff features three tiers of stonework in silver settings, a central dot with teardrops above and below, set atop a silver base with additional embellishments. The lips of the bracelet are interesting, with a hand hammered scalloped silver ledge that dips over the cuff. The clasp is a pin that slips through three gates to close the bracelet.

This was found in our grandmother’s vintage jewelry collection. We do not know when or where she acquired it but she did go to China in the 1930s. Then again, she and her aunts, the Burr sisters, also shopped San Francisco’s import shops…
