Vintage Collectible Celluloid Charms: Donkey, Dogs, and Parrot (Set of 5)
Our research suggests these may be Cracker Jack of gumball machine prizes, but ours came in a box from a Van Wormer & Rodrigues, Inc. Jewelers, in San Francisco. We have no idea if it was just a convenient box or may have been something to keep the children occupied while our grandmother was shopping for jewelry…
These date back to the 1920s-1950s. They were popular collectibles (and still are). Each has a loop on the upper side. They were often turned used as pendants or bracelet charms, or sewn onto pillows, ties, or hats. Collectible value varies based on rarity and condition.
Included are
- 1 pink eared donkey/burro
- 1 curly tailed dog charm
- 2 Scottish terriers (1 black, 1 cream)
- 1 Cairn terrier
None of ours are marked made in Japan, where many others were made. All of ours are in very good vintage condition, although the three with metal loops on top do have rust on the loop. How rare they are, we are not sure.
