Vintage Guido Gambone for ICS Italian Green Ceramic Pitcher / Jug

$250.00Price

This uniquely shaped, green glazed large pitcher was designed by Italian ceramicist Guido Gambone (1909-1969). He is described by 1st Dibs as ‘is one of the most important and influential Italian ceramic artists in the mid 20th century’. He started creating his own pottery in the 1930s.

We identified this through online research, finding a smaller one sold for slightly more on Etsy recently. It had nearly similar markings on the base. On ours are the numbers 124, 126/6, I-C-S, Italy. Early in his career as a ceramicist, Gambone created several pieces for I.C.S (Industria Ceramica Salernitana), but usually added a fish mark in the late 1930s, so this may be a later design.

We believe this may have been gifted to our mother by the late Countessa Dorothy Bonin-Longare, the sister of our grandfather who married an Italian count.

This pitcher is not in perfect condition. It has 6 notches along the base, a sign of its age and use. In the mirror, or bowl, of the pitcher, there is also a glazing pockmark that should be sealed if using this for drinking liquids.
