Vintage Hand Painted Hand Carved Olive, Brown, Black, White, Red Wood Owl
We were unable to identify where this came from. We always thought it was Balinese but Google Image Search sent us to Guatemala and Mexico. Then we checked for Native American crafts in this style. All dead ends. We did find one match online, but it was to a prop shop with no explanatory description! We leave it to a buyer to solve the mystery!
There is a space behind the head that suggests this was meant to hold short candles although we could not imagine risking the damage to the artwork if one did that. It has 6,000 penciled on the bottom which may have been the price, currency unknown.
This piece is in very good vintage condition, especially considering we know our grandmother had this in her house so it might be mid century or earlier. There are the tiniest chips to one toe and the back of the tail. See photos.
