Vintage Hemmi Japan Bamboo Slide Rule No. 250, 1950s Mint Condition
This apparently never used double-sided slide rule is beautiful. Designed for scientific and engineering calculations, it is described as a mechanical analog computer by some. It was widely used before the adoption of electronic calculators.
The Hemmi No. 250 is known for its high-quality construction using bamboo as a core material, providing dimensional stability. The bamboo core was covered by a white celluloid laminate on which the scales were printed, a signature innovation by Hemmi. Metal straps hold the three bamboo strips together.
It has a movable double-sided cursor with hairline indicator to align values on different scales. Its scales include:
Obverse: DF, CF, CIF, CI, C, D, and L
Reverse: K, A, B, TIU2, TI1, SI, D, and DI
For collectors:
- It has the Sun logo suggesting it was made by the original Hemmi producer of these, not rebranded for distribution in the USA as many were, especially post WWII.
- It is believed to have been first launched in 1950. While date codes were introduced that year, they were not consistently stamped onto all products until 1952. (We do not believe this one has a date code after checking with a ‘raking light’ as advised.)
- The rule came out just as stamps changed from OCCUPIED JAPAN to just JAPAN.
As stated above, it appears this slide rule was never used. The box is in good vintage condition but does have some worn corners and rub marks.
