Vintage Lightly Lacquered Wood Box with Brass/Copper Accents (Cracked)
This distinctive reddish wood round trinket or jewelry box is near pristine inside with a light layer of lacquer covering all sides and the rings of the trunk of wood it was carved from clearly visible on the top and bottom.
The exterior is evenly banded from the same single piece of wood. It has an interesting grain pattern intermittently reaching up from several points. These are complimented by decorative copper or low quality brass panels attached with rivets to the lower edge of the bowl and the outer edge and center of the lid. The central piece appears in the shape of a lotus or flower.
To our surprise, we were unable to find anything similar online (unless one counts historic shields as comparable, which we do not).
We would guess this is Asian in origin but we’ve searched online using every country we thought it might be from – Japan, Korea, Tibet, India, Indonesia, etc. We do not know when or how this piece came into our family’s possession.
As obvious in photos, there is a large crack in the lid. There is also some residue in the nooks and crannies which we were unable to tease out. We thought it might be remnants of polish from an unknown earlier attempt to polish the accent panels but it is also found in the unique grain of the wood on the sides. The locking mechanism which would have attached the lid to the bowl is missing. The back hinge is slightly bent in one corner, pulling away from the box. We believe this piece still looks beautiful however…
Bonus: While all our rivets seem to be in place, there was a package in the box with extra rivets which we will include with this piece.
