Vintage MAYCO Rollmaster Mid-Century Metal Note Paper Roll Holder
Popular in the mid-century, these note paper roll holders or dispensers were used for grocery and to-do lists, messages, reminders, doodles, etc. They could be used flat on a desk or hung on the wall (see the notch in the back in photos).
A metal rod slips into the center of a note paper roll. The paper then should be fed under and into the tilted plate, slipping under the first bracket and then fed into the second center bracket, using the knob on the right to further feed it up the top. When done writing, one uses the knob to feed it out and up, then rip it smoothly along the rim of the upper bracket.
(Note: The few of these online often show the paper first feeding into the top bracket which we believe is incorrect, having seen this used by our parents back in the day. See the lip of the metal above the plate which is tilted up which makes no sense if the paper is starting at that point!)
This dispenser is stamped MAYCO MADE IN U.S.A. on the inner base, which can also serve as a storage are for a few piece of paper, the bottom of the plate lifting up as shown in photos.
The paper in our machine is 3 1/2” wide. We checked online for refill options and found several rolls available but at 3” wide or less. At sites like Staples, they are called ‘bond paper rolls’.
For the younger crowd, the pink stripe in the middle of the paper in these photos was something done to alert the user to the fact the roll was almost used up, the stripe turning brighter closer to the end.
