Vintage Mexican Folk Art Enameled Gourd Decorative Bowl (Slightly Distressed)
This orange and pink beauty unfortunately has a crack on the side and the exterior some faded coloring issue which may be due to damage in the cleaning process at some point in the past. It is still a striking piece, with vibrant orange base and magenta patterns that appear to be paper or stickers that were hand cut and applied to the bowl before a final layer of clear enamel was added. The paper looks like it is peeling along the rim of the inner bowl but we don’t believe it is as it still feels like it is under a layer of enamel.
Inside the bowl, the center motif is a stylized sun or flower with petals. Radiating out from the core are layers of floral and leave patterns with a geometric band near the rim. On the exterior, geometric bands encircle the base leading to a central image of rabbits frolicking within a border of plant stalks.
We believe our grandparents picked this up in Mexico sometime in the 1950s-1980s.
We recommend this be bought only as a decorative item, or a trinket holder. We do not believe it is safe to use as a bowl for food. The base is also rounded so it is not stable.
