Vintage Mexican Hand-Painted Majolica Folk Art Bowls (Set of 3), 7"
We identified them as majolica from an online search. Mexican majolica is characterized by its painted designs, often incorporating vibrant colors and motifs inspired by nature, like fauna and flora. The tradition of majolica, and its related style of Talavera from Puebla, has roots in Spain, with Spanish settlers bringing it to Mexico. This type of majolica is more rustic than some seen online, meant for decoration and regular use.
There is no signature or country designation on the bowls so we presume they were probably purchased at a local market by our grandmother Winona Sands who loved folk art and travelled extensively in Mexico in the 1950s-1960s.
Bowls have many original imperfections as visible in photos. Some are also chipped (in one case repaired) and show signs of age although we don’t believe they were used for more than decoration.
They are similar to a set of larger bowls also on sale.
Two are H 1 3/4” x D 7 ½”, the other is H 1 ⅛” x D 7 ¼”
Weights range from 10.5 to 11.5 to 12 oz.
Note: These are most likely not dishwasher or microwave safe.
Disclaimer: We have tried to make sure colors shown in photos are representative of the real colors of each item. We have tried to identify all imperfections in descriptions, but we may have missed some. If you are unhappy with your purchase, let us know.
