Vintage Mexican Sterling Silver Padlock Charm on Short Chain 5”
This Taxco style chain is only 5” in circumference so it must have been for a child or as an attachment to luggage or other property. The padlock charm is marked 925 on the back, the rest hard to read. The chain’s clasp reads HECHO EN MEXICO 0.925 along the edge and FVE or EVE in the center, which would be the maker’s mark.
The charm could be a ‘milagro’ charm, popular in South America with Catholics for use as protections or votive offerings. The padlock has raised studs on its surface, which was common in the 1950s-1960s in Mexican silverwork, according to our online research.
This was found in our grandmother’s vintage jewelry collection. She was a frequent visitor to Mexico in the 1960s and 1970s so we presume she bought it there.
