Vintage Multan Cord with Blue Green Enamel Silver Ornaments and Pendant 27"
This rare piece hails from Pakistan’s Multan, where the blue green enamel on silver beads and pendants is a signature from times long ago.
The 14 ornaments resemble double loop handled pots, each with a floral element in the center, some admittedly more well crafted than others. They are attached by double silver loops to a cord lined with threads of different shades, including a staggered gold thread, cream, brown, and green threads. The closure is a loop and knotted cord end section at the back.
The centerpiece pendant is firmly attached to the cord, no markings shown. It features a green enameled floral design with three birds and a purposely fragmented edge of green enameled ‘leaves’. The back of the pendant has some barely discernable markings which, when we turned it upside down, appeared to show a camel coming from the left into a countryside setting, but that could be our imagination.
This piece came from our grandmother's vintage jewelry collection. We do not know when or where she bought it or if she was gifted it by the Burr sisters, but they did do a world tour in 1934-1935 with her, and may have visited Pakistan as early as the 1920s.
We found nothing like this necklace online, and only a few of the ornamental pot-shaped beads selling for $ 48-103 each individually.
Our necklace has some unravelling of threads on the cord as visible in photos, and the enamel on the pendant has two damaged ‘leaves’ but they may have come that way. The back of the pendant has what might be a wax stain. The green thread tightly wrapped around the loop area of the cord is coming loose as shown in photos. We would recommend a buyer get a professional to restore this piece to its original glamour.
