Vintage Nepali Lakhey Dance Papier Mache Masks (For Décor Only) (Set of 2)
Ours were most likely purchased by our mother Nancy Chandler in Kathmandu in 1966-1967 when she lived there for a year and a half. The blue one is in very fragile condition, the black demon mask holding together a bit better, as shown in photos.
We believe both were souvenir masks, a bit smaller than the average face size without holes for attaching them as masks. Both come with small strings attached to the top for hanging on the wall. They have been gracing our stairwell for decades.
The Lakhey Dance is a vibrant, traditional Newari masked dance from Nepal, particularly the Kathmandu Valley, where performers wear fierce, demon-like masks and colorful costumes to represent ancient protective spirits. Characterized by wild movements, thumping traditional music, and the symbolic vanquishing of evil, the dance is performed during festivals like Indra Jatra to bring prosperity, protection, and joy to the community. The Lakhey, a demon who became a protector, interacts with the crowd, accepting offerings and even being taunted by a small boy called Jhyalincha, symbolizing the overcoming of fear and disease.
