Vintage Peruvian Folk Art Dolls with Drop Spindle and Ball of Yarn

$10.00Price

These dolls are made of cotton wrapped wire, with indigenous costumes. Distinguishing them from the more common ‘worry dolls’ of South America are their sewn-on simple faces (their eyes dots, their lips one stitch) and their cotton string wrapped legs ending in points as if on tiptoe. They are also tied together in the back. We were unable to identify the traditional garments they are wearing, but we were able to identify the green yarn wrapped instrument in the male’s hands as a drop spindle and then realized she is holding her arms up  with a ball of yarn forming in her hands.

We do not know when or where or who acquired this in our family. We suspect they may date back to the 1920s or 1930s, but they could just as well date to the 1950s to 1970s. Sorry!

They are in excellent vintage condition, no unravelling of the cotton wrapped arms or legs, and no stains. Her poncho has a couple of loose threads which could easily be clipped. We don’t believe these have been handled much at all through the ages.
