Vintage Rajasthani Silver Fish with Ghungroos Bells Screw Back Earrings

SKU: E019
$40.00Price

This unique pair of ‘tribal’ earrings features what initially looks like a man, but has a fish in the center and bells dangling from five points. We were able to identify it as originating in Rajasthan, India, where fish symbolize prosperity and abundance, good luck, and fertility. The balls are ‘ghungroos’ which are the small bells strung together and worn as anklets primarily by classical Indian dancers to create rhythm adding to performances. Ours has 15 bells (3 each on five clasps) and they do indeed emit a tinkling sound when shaken.

STERLING is stamped on the foot of the screw backs.

We do not know when or where these were purchased but our grandmother visited India in 1934 and our mother in 1969 … They are in excellent condition, exhibiting a patina that we dared not remove.

These dangle 1 1/4” below the lobe. H 1 7/8” x L 1 1/4”
