Vintage Rare Silver Ghungroo Inspired Pendants/Ornaments (Set of 2)
Our grandmother loved sets of things that were almost identical, but not, such as these two pendants or ornaments. Believed to be from Rajasthan, India, and made of silver, silver alloy or oxidized silver, they are truly unique, nothing similar found online.
At first glance, one is missing a ball on the end, but on closer inspection, it appears intentional. The same piece has ghungroo beads, or bells, that are firmly attached to the structure. The other, the one with the bead on the end, has looser ghungroo bells that can be slightly moved. Neither piece however allows for the bells to ring or tinkle when moved. Perhaps they are only ghungroo shaped…
Ghungroo beads are tiny bells worn as bracelets and anklets by Indian dancers. They have been used in many other inspired creations as well.
Each piece has a short chain attached to the top , with a decorative catch atop handbeaten casings, leading to five layers of ghungroos, with a nub with decorative casing at the end, only one with additional bead inserted.
They are in good condition and patina for their age, believed to have been purchased by our grandmother in India in 1935. They have dents and other natural imperfections but no damage. They tested positive for silver on a home acid test.
