Vintage Silver and Black Coral Bangles (One Rough, One Smooth), 7 1/2”
Believing these to be Bakelite, we tested these under hot water and believed they immediately tested positive as the smell they emitted was so strong. We questioned if they other bangles we were testing were Bakelite as they had more of a chemical smell. We just assumed these were older Bakelite pieces but when we input the image of the them into Google’s Image Search, it immediately suggested this pair were made of Hawaiian black coral, which often come fastened in the same manner as ours. We then learned black coral emits a very strong fishy smell when held under hot water, which would explain our earlier confusion… Examined up close, one can see what look like coral features in the composition of the material.
These were found in our grandmother’s and mother’s vintage jewelry collection. We would guess that our mother picked them up on her honeymoon in Hawaii in the early 1960s.
One is quite rough with one big odd patch as shown in photos. The other is quite smooth. They have unmarked silver bands pinned into place, one of which might have a small crack.
