Vintage Silver Plated Guatemalan Chachal Twist Chain Necklace 20”
We believe this is a strand of twisted silver plated copper filigree chain from a Guatamalan wedding necklace, or chachal, the pattern and chain design traditional ceremonial wear for a bride and groom. For weddings however this chain would be more than triple the length, close to 70”, to be draped over the bride and groom during the wedding vows.
This was included in our grandmother’s vintage jewelry collection, but has no markings and no indication of where or when she bought it. It is in good condition but does appear to have some ‘crimping’ where the spinning twists in the chain seem to break. We were unable to figure out how to ‘uncrimp’ it, almost as if it is not crimped. We suspect the clip in the back is not original but did read that it is normal for these strands to be provided without a clasp, so our grandmother may have clipped a chain and added her own clip.
Length 20” clasp to clasp
