Vintage Thai Palm Frond Woven Hand Painted Fish Mobile, 25” Long
We believe our mother was gifted or bought this in the 1970s. Made in Ayutthaya, the former Thai capital, these delicate, hand crafted mobiles are usually hung over or near a baby’s cradle to attract the eyes (but never directly over the child) or in a doorway to invite good health and prosperity. They are delightful to watch and listen to when there is a light breeze.
The mother fish, designed to resemble a carp, sits under a palm woven cupola ending in an eight-pointed star with fruit hanging from each point. Three strands of two baby fish each hang from her lower side, each strand capped with little cupolas with more paper fruit. They are all woven from palm fronds and painted in bright red, green, yellow, black, and silver tone colors. The carp and fruit symbolize abundance and the babies symbolize fertility.
Ours is vintage. There is peeling paint, especially the silver tone paint, and there will be some dust as we did not have the time to do more than a quick wipe of the pieces. It is fragile so care must be taken when dusting. Included will be a small strand of three even smaller baby fish that fell off at some point over the last few decades. Missing will be a strand of fruit that appears to have disappeared from the top cupola as shown in photos. A buyer will probably also want to replace or polish the rust off the hook it hangs from.
We will do our best to pack this in such a way it arrives in one piece, we promise! While these are hard to find nowadays, we have priced this in the knowledge it may not last long as it is not a pristine, new piece.
Approx. H 25” x L 11” x D 7”
