Vintage Thai Temple Rubbing on Rice Paper (Large): Stone Tablet (43” x 24”)
We believe this charcoal temple rubbing on handmade rice paper is taken from a temple wall in Thailand. It features a Dhama wheel or wheel of life at the top with conch shells on either side. We believe it is from Thailand and the script ancient Sanskrit, although we could not identify exactly where it was created.
This is one of several our mother probably purchased while passing through Thailand in 1968 or upon moving there in 1969 as the practice of creating temple rubbings with crayons on handmade rice paper direct from temple walls was banned in the late 1960s or early 1970s. It is also possible it is from Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which she visited in 1969 before the Khmer Rouge made travel to the country dangerous.
We have three rubbings available, one in darker charcoal, the other two lighter as shown in photos – let us know which you prefer. All show the same defect in the lower quarter, confirming that the missing section is from the original temple wall, not the rubbing itself. They are in very good condition for their age, although they have some creases and edges may be a bit frayed as is normal with handmade paper - perfectly imperfect! We believe they have been rolled up for decades, never used.
