Vintage Tibetan Dark Bodhi Seed Japa Mala Prayer Beads (Restringing Needed)
We presume our mother Nancy bought these in Nepal in the late 1960s when she lived there for a year and a half. We have 107 beads, one missing but we believe we heard it fall. We just haven’t found it yet. For reciting mantras, 108 beads are the norm.
As mentioned above, restringing is needed. We have one long strand of 78 beads, a shorter strand of 18, and 11 loose beads (hoping we find the one we heard roll across the floor)… Among the beads are a few that do not match, including one red bead, which may be red coral, and two smaller beads of indeterminate substance. One looks like a bodhi bead but is carved much smaller. The other looks and feels like it may be made of yak hair, just guessing!
The bodhi beads have special meaning to practitioners of Buddhism. Buddha is said to have found enlightenment while seated under a bodhi tree. Bodhi in Sanskrit means enlightenment.
Malas are held in the hand, and with each repetition of a mantra, a bead is moved with the thumb, traditionally towards oneself. After completing a full circle, the mala is reversed, and the process continues.
Our bodhi beads are dark, unpolished beads, each with its own characterful veins of darker color and many with natural imperfections including chips. They are in good condition for their age but could use a cleaning. And definitely need restringing.
Each bead is approx. 1/2” in diameter (12mm)
Weight of the full 107 bead mala is 4.62 oz (132g)
