Vintage WISS Seamstress Pinking Shears / Crafting Scissors (Zigzag Cut)
These cut paper in a zigzag pattern which is what we always thought they were meant to do, but what do you know? It turns out they are ‘pinking shears’ with saw-toothed blades designed to cut a zigzag pattern into fabric to reduce the fraying on the edges of woven fabrics. The zigzag cut minimizes the length of individual threads that can unravel. Will wonders never cease!
They are also used to create decorative edges on fabrics. They were popular before the advent of sergers or zigzag sewing machine stitches.
Ours are used as evident from the worn off black on the handles and some tarnishing on the exterior of the scissors as shown in photos.
