Vintage Woman’s Black Velvet 3/4 Length ‘Storm Play’ Opera Coat, c 1950s
- Modeled by Nancy’s youngest daughter Kim Chandler, an adult with Down Syndrome so a bit shorter than the average woman –
This 3/4 length coat has no clasps or distracting decorations. It is just a simple velvet coat to wrap oneself up in, described by Google Image Search as an opera coat. The label inside identifies it as created by Storm Play Fashion using its trademarked Temp-Resisto insulated lining woven of Celanese acetate. The fabric is imported according to another label.
Shoulder to shoulder measures 15” and the length is currently 42” but, as shown in photos, there is another 3” of cloth pinned up inside. The lining covers it, so our grandmother may well have worn it with the pins in, but we would not imagine anyone would do so today…
We see the corners appear to have been sewn to the shorter length so we did not remove the pins. Hopefully whoever picks this piece will be able to remove the pins and undo the corner stitching. We didn’t want to try to do it ourselves given our lack of seamstress skills…
In other issues, there are a few stains inside on either side of the opening in the lower 1/4 section of the coat. We have not taken this piece to be dry cleaned so we do not know if they will come out with professional treatment.
