William Wenzlick: Ornamental Landscape circa 1860s

$5.00Price

This penciled ornamental design was of a time. It was drawn by our grandmother’s father William Wenzlick, before he became a doctor we presume. Admittedly, it looks like something he might have drawn in school, with a bit of cheekiness that we think runs in our family.

The artwork features a ship and boat on the water, birds flying above, the landscape style art framed by an ornate, decorative border featuring scrolling foliage and cherubic figures which may have been meant to look like mermaids but their legs look like serpents! (We also notice the oarsmen seem to be fighting over a single oar in the rowboat at sea.) Could this have been young William rebelling against formal classic art training?

It is signed in the lower right: Wm Wenzlick. There is no formal title or date. It is in decent vintage condition, a bit creased but not damaged.
