Winona Wenzlick Sands (1907-2002): ASIA / Japanese Figure (Damaged), 1920s
This artwork of a Japanese figure was created by our grandmother in her art student days at UCLA, part of a series produced for a special assignment, a magazine cover or tourism promotion campaign. We have one other in stock featuring a Balinese scene, and photos of another two ASIA entitled pieces, but no more details than those on the back of the frame and a note from our mother saying these were done as a student.
It is sadly damaged but we wanted to share it here to celebrate her boldness in using gold, red and a rich dark blue to capture what we believe is a Japanese god, the clothing, the long beard and the staff in hand characteristic of depictions of Daoist immortals.
Read more about our grandmother, Winona Wenzlick Sands, and her art history on our About Us page.
Note: The photos shown here capture how this piece looks under the light. In the shadows it is much darker but still striking.
