Woodblock Printing Block: Mythical Cat
We were unable to identify the mythical creature on this woodblock but we believe it to be some kind of cat. AI suggested it was a stylized version of the Tibetan Kirtimukha, but as it has a body (which Kirtimukha was instructed to eat, leaving him body-less in imagery), we doubt it is that.
The symbol between his paws could be a stylized version of a blessing of longevity, but we were also unable to confirm that.
This is a hand-carved wood block for printing on paper or textiles. The red color suggests it was used at least once although we see no other evidence of use. We are not sure where it is from or when it was purchased, but we do think the eyes bear an uncanny resemblence to artwork our mother created, including etchings using a similar method of carving....
